John F. Emerson, Attorney at Law

[email protected]

I am the former General Counsel for the Charleston County School District, the second largest school district in the state, where I served from 2008 until September of 2017. Among my other responsibilities in that role, I was in a position to provide daily advice and support to principals and administrators in the District’s more than 80 schools and programs. It is my philosophy that schools and school boards who benefit from high quality advice and training, boost morale, reduce conflict and more effectively avoid costly litigation. I provide advice and training in many areas, particularly on employment issues, including recruiting, hiring, pay and benefits, discipline and termination. I offer counsel and advocacy in the areas of special education and student discipline, and facilitate resolution of family disputes over custody and control. I advise on board governance and procedure, write and revise board policy, and provide direction on all obligations under the S.C. Freedom of Information Act.

I received my undergraduate degree from Emory University and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1992. I am a certified specialist in employment and labor law, a designation regulated and awarded under the supervision of the S.C. Supreme Court.
